Using DNA for your Family History

-Ann Marie Coghlan – member APG

What Is Genetic Genealogy?

• It’s a different way of connecting with other people who are related to me.

• It gives me the ‘match’ but I have to work out the connection using my own and the ‘matchee’s research.

Why would I use it to find out more about my family?

• It’s very useful in locating family place of origin; • men of the same surname;
• breaking down a brick wall;
• establishing cousin relationships;

• distant family history that goes past the record thresholds.

How can it help a Surname Study?

• Establish common ancestors and develop pedigrees;
• follow emigrant lines;
• put cousins in touch with each other to collaborate research.

• Set up a surname DNA Project at familytreedna.com which allows members to make contacts within the group and to look for related lines.

• Gives another ‘landing place’ for people researching your surname.

What types of testing are available?

One sample of DNA can give the following opportunities;

• YDna gives the fathers’ fathers’ line;

• At Dna gives cousin matches on every ancestor to 7 generations;

• Mt Dna gives the mothers’ mothers’ line.
• Men can get results on all these tests.
• Women cannot get results on the Y Dna test.

How do I test and what is the cost?

• Familytreedna.com has tests for all the above (swab inside of your cheek) under E100 upwards

• Ancestry.com has the AtDNA – cousins’ test (spit collection) under E100

• both companies are based in USA. Payment is by credit card and return shipping costs are not included in the price. Currently £20 sterling for Ancestry and Parcel post cost for FTDNA. Your card is debited on receipt of the kit and the exchange rate is calculated on that date.
